Located on the exclusive Moskito Island, a 132-acre property in the British Virgin Islands, this architectural jewel was designed by the award-winning team of architects Charles Myer & Partners Ltd and interior designers Andra Birkerts Design, and built by EMCS Caribbean Ltd.
The Cape Stout estate seamlessly blends with its dramatic ocean landscape, featuring innovative indoor-outdoor architecture and breathtaking views that capture both sunrise and sunset. The integrated design vision was a uniquely collaborative effort of the architects, led by Don Knerr (Charles Myer & Partners, Cambridge, MA), and the interior design team, led by Andra Birkerts (Andra Birkerts Design, Concord, MA). The result of this collaboration is a level of unique luxury that harmonizes beautiful architecture, bringing elegance and functionality to every space.
Overcoming the Challenges of a Private Island
Building on a remote island involves complex logistical and construction challenges. From material procurement and delivery to difficulties posed by the terrain and intricate architectural features, every step of the Cape Stout project tested our team.
How did we do it? Our recipe for success is simple: meticulous planning, innovative techniques, and constant collaboration with the design team. Every decision not only overcame obstacles but also preserved the environment and respected the architectural vision.
Respecting the Design
Cape Stout comprises seven buildings designed to reflect superior aesthetic cohesion and functionality. Our team worked closely with Charles Myer & Partners at every step to execute the architectural vision.
A highlight of the interior design is the use of 104 unique types of tiles, ranging from hand-painted terracotta in the kitchen to Venetian mosaics on the staircases. These materials not only enhance the beauty of each space but are also resilient to the Caribbean’s challenging weather conditions and salt air.
Creating Spaces for Family Connection
Cape Stout was conceived as a place where family and friends could gather to share unforgettable moments. From playful communal areas like the “Beach Barn,” which accommodates up to 10 people, to cozy nooks designed for relaxation, every space nurtures connection and togetherness.
The interior design combines luxury with practicality, featuring elements such as nets suspended above the pool and high-end furniture that reflects the unique personality of each building. This blend of fun and elegance ensures that Cape Stout is more than just a place to stay; it’s a home.
